Libertarian Party of Florida Applauds Approval of Solar Choice Ballot Initiative

Libertarians Encourage Freedom of Choice for Individuals

Panama City, FL – The Libertarian Party of Florida celebrates the Florida Supreme Court’s approval of the language proposed by the Floridians for Solar Choice ballot initiative. This significant development allows the proposed amendment to be included on the 2016 election ballot, pending the collection and verification of the required 683,149 signatures by February 1, 2016.

Floridians for Solar Choice, a coalition of various free market organizations including the Libertarian Party of Florida, welcomes this decision. Char-Lez Braden, Chair of The Libertarian Party of Florida, expresses his enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted by the court’s affirmation that the people of Florida deserve the freedom to choose their electrical power regulation. Our efforts will be focused on ensuring the passage of this amendment, which will introduce much-needed competition into the electrical generation industry, ultimately empowering individual consumers with more options.”

Under the current Florida law, citizens and businesses are explicitly prohibited from purchasing power directly from sources other than private or public electric utility companies. Florida remains one of only four states with such a restrictive law. The approval of the Solar Choice initiative will enable companies like Solar City to enter the Florida market, granting Floridians greater control over their energy needs.

About the Libertarian Party of Florida The Libertarian Party of Florida (LPF) upholds a “live and let live” approach to public policy. Committed to nonviolent political action, the LPF firmly believes that governments should primarily exist to defend and protect the rights and freedoms of individuals.
