LIBERTARIANS PRAISE THE FREE MARKET

Gasoline Price Controls Are NOT The Answer

Winter Park, Florida - The Libertarian Party of Florida (LPF) has come out in support of the free market in determining gasoline pricing and denounce suggested price controls by the government. The LPF also stated that should oil companies be found of fraud, then they should be prosecuted.

Libertarian Party of Florida chairman Karl Dickey stated today, "It is basic supply and demand economics 101. Prices are going to rise when there is greater demand and supply stays steady or shrinks. The public has many choices in dealing with high gas prices: drive a hybrid like I do, be conservative in your vehicle trips, buy stock in the oil companies as a hedge against your increase in gasoline costs, work from home, and there are many more."

Adjusted for inflation, in 1980 we were paying $3.06 per gallon so the rise has not been huge. We have been fortunate the price of gasoline has been kept so low until recently. What has risen is the amount of local, state, and federal taxes on each gallon of gasoline. The Libertarian Party of Florida suggests to be in contact with their local and state governments and call for lowering their spending budgets and thereby the taxes on each gallon of gasoline rather than seek emotion-driven legislation. In addition, the LPF suggests an end to keeping gasoline prices artificially high. Florida has a law that does just that, which hurts the consumer and denies the free market from thriving.

The Libertarian Party of Florida has taken their message to Governor Crist for consideration.
